Welcome to the official website of the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Commission. The Government of Rwanda (GoR), in a bid to reduce the size of its army and support regional peace process, adopted a strategy of Demobilisation of RPA and integration of the ex-armed groups opposed to GoR, including settled ex-FAR. In 1997, Government started the first stage of the Rwanda Demobilisation and Reintegration Programme (RDRP Stage I) where between 1997-2001, a total of 18,692 RPA including 2,364 child ex-combatants were demobilized with a donor Trust fund managed by UNDP.
Out of a total budget of USD 38.9M, only USD 9.5M was contributed and the GoR had to contribute USD 10M and in 2001, GoR discussed and agreed with the World Bank to start a second stage of the programme. The second stage of the RDRP commenced within the framework of the World Bank’s Multi-Country Demobilization and Reintegration Program (MDRP). It is estimated that the MDRP will support more than 450,000 ex-combatants from a number of countries such as Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, as well as Uganda.
Our programme is within a framework aimed at bringing peace and security within the Great Lakes Region. Our mission is to ensure that ex-combatants are socially and economically reintegrated into their communities.
Our role becomes important in contributing to peace and security within the region...
We strongly believe that our Commission in the future will concentrate on intensive sensitization even beyond the borders, vocational training for professional skills and increase support for the cooperatives and associations in which ex-combatants are members. All this undertaking task will be the work of several partners of which the first beneficiaries are obviously the ex-combatants. Thank you all and we wish you a fruitful surfing. |
